Choosing Wisely Canada releases new nursing gerontology list

Choosing Wisely has published a new list which includes 6 areas that nurses and older adults should question in relation to their care. “Six Things Nurses and Patients Should Question” was jointly developed by The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association (CGNA).

Question #4 highlights mobility: “Don’t encourage bed rest for older persons during a hospital stay unless medically indicated”, and acknowledges the work of Dr. Barbara Liu, Executive Director of the RGP of Toronto, and other geriatric clinical leaders in Ontario for their research in “Outcomes of Mobilisation of Vulnerable Elders in Ontario (MOVE ON)”. Congratulations to the many people who contributed to this list, including one of our Senior Friendly Hospital ACTION collaborative members: Judy Smith, Lead Western York Region Health Link and Clinical Nurse Specialist – Seniors Wellness who participated on the national Choosing Wisely working group.
