Important Information about COVID-19

Specialized geriatric services (SGS) throughout the GTA continue to provide care and support to patients and their caregivers during this COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure the safety and well-being of everyone, some practices have been modified.

Phone or virtual visits

Services will be conducting most visits by phone or through virtual video visits.

Face to face visits

Select services are still offering face-to-face visits when required.
If a face-to-face visit is required, appropriate protective precautions will be taken to keep patients and the health care providers as safe as possible. Contact your provider for more details.

If you are a patient, please contact your family doctor to be referred to a specialized geriatric service.
If you are a referring clinician, please complete and send the appropriate referral forms as was procedure prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The RGP of Toronto and SGS are following the most current guidance from Public Health authorities and host organizations to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of older adults, who are particularly vulnerable.  Contact the SGS provider directly to confirm information, including which services are available, applicable screening procedures and alternatives for ambulatory appointments (e.g. telephone, videoconferencing).

What should I do if I think I have COVID-19?

If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to, or are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you are advised to use Ontario’s COVID-19 self Assessment Tool, contact Telehealth at (1-866-797-0000), or your primary healthcare provider.

What can I do to protect myself?

  • Wash hands regularly: use warm water/soap or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol; rub all surfaces for 15-20 seconds to maintain clean hands and fingernails
  • Clean frequently used surfaces and objects: cleaning items can kill the virus and prevent contamination
  • Practice social distancing: evidence supports maintaining a minimum distance of 2 meters from other people; connect with family and friends over the phone, video chat or email
  • Keep active: activities that get you moving help you to stay healthy – go for a walk or use this poster to help you move more in your home

What can I expect from SGS provider?

Providers are following infection prevention and control procedures to ensure everyone is safe.  Screening procedures are in place to identify people that are at risk of having or spreading the virus; protective equipment may be worn by providers who are in contact with clients that meet specific criteria.  You can expect to receive the same quality of service and may be offered virtual alternatives to in-person appointments.
